On Favignana, people have been quarrying for centuries to extract the stone needed to build houses and grand buildings. It’s a history kept safe within the island’s heart, which you can experience firsthand thanks to the Hypogeal Cathedral, Favignana’s cave museum.
The Hypogeal Cathedral is an ecomuseum, telling and celebrating the story of a place and the community that created and shaped it over the centuries, with two main focuses: the quarrying of “tufo” (as the calcarenite is called in Sicilian) by the “pirriaturi” (Sicilian for miners) beneath the island, and the marine life along the coasts and seabeds of Favignana.
Explore the underground tunnels, discover the old quarrying techniques, and the period artefacts used by the quarrymen.
Learn about the seafaring legends, and take a virtual dive through the seabed of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area.
Get in tune with Favignana through the vintage photos and videos that tell the story and culture of the island.
