The Favignana quarry ecomuseum celebrates the socio-cultural identity of the area, which is linked to stone extraction. It offers visitors a unique experience, resulting from a blend of exclusive content and special “effects” made possible by the skilful and measured use of technology.
The Favignana quarry ecomuseum is a living space where the history of calcarenite extraction is interwoven with the island’s landscape and traditions. The museum provides an immersive experience amongst the majestic underground walls, particularly within the heart of the quarry – “The Cathedral” – named for its imposing spaces and the interplay of light that paints shades ranging from white to absolute black upon the walls.
Here, visitors can wander amongst the “pileri” (pillars), observing the marks left by ancient tools and discovering the history of “tufo” extraction, which was fundamental for the construction of the island and much of western Sicily and the Trapani region.
The extraordinary acoustics and profound silence create a unique atmosphere, perfect for cultural events, performances, and concerts that celebrate this natural theatre.
The journey is an invitation to reflect on the relationship between humankind, stone, and landscape, revealing how the quarries are not simply scars on the rock.
